It s normally a cost cutting measure when done at the corners they don t have to be careful or precise about the corner cut etc.

Make sure that a drip cap is installed first over the window before going for the hardie siding.

After installation cover the gap with acrylic or urethane caulk.
Provide increased spacing along the trim if specified by the siding application instructions.
Face nail trims using 2 inch 16 gauge finish nails after every 16 inches apart.
Do not miter corner joints of band boards fascia corner trim etc.
You will see the trims lay nice and flat.
If you re cutting dark vinyl siding use chalk or light colored tape to mark the line you want to cut.
Exterior trim over siding i have never seen it on window door trim but seen plenty on door window trim.
